On February 28th, 2023, the 6th Regenerative Medicine Forum of the International Society for Regenerative Medicine and Wound Repair (ISRMWR) with the theme of “Wound Repair and Regeneration” was held online in the United States. This is a critical annual conference for the ISRMWR, which not only commemorates Professor Rongxiang Xu on the international “Regeneration Day”, but also serves as an important node for linking more international resources and promoting the sustainable development of regenerative medicine with leaders and experts from politics, business, non-profit organizations, and the field of regenerative medicine. Xu Peng, the chairman of ISRMWR, and Li Li, a member of the board of directors of Mebo Group, attended the forum. The opening speech was given by the Speaker of the California Assembly, Mr. Anthony Rendon, and the forum was chaired by California State Assemblyman Phillip Chen. Top scholars and experts in the field of burn treatment worldwide were also invited to participate, including Tina Louise Palmieri, former president of the American Burn Association, Rodolfo Ariel Miranda Altamirano, elected president of the International Society for Burn Injuries, and Sadovoy Alexey Stanislavovich from the Kyiv Burn Center.
]In his speech, California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon expressed gratitude to Xu Peng, Li Li, and the ISRMWR for their contributions to the field of regenerative medicine. He emphasized that wound repair and regeneration are very challenging medical issues, especially in the face of war and disasters. Moreover, treating wounds is a problem and challenge that humanity will always face, and how to use the power of science to utilize the body’s self-healing function to treat wounds is a topic worthy of exploration.
ISRMWR Chairman and Chairman of Mebo Group, Kevin Xu , shared his thoughts and insights on the importance of regenerative medicine and wound repair, and also discussed the inheritance and development of the ISRMWR regenerative medicine forum. Xu Peng stated that over the past six years, the ISRMWR has held annual conferences to commemorate Professor Rongxiang Xu, and through this platform, the vision of Professor Rongxiang Xu has been passed on, his precious legacy has been passed on to the next generation of leaders, scholars, and scientists. Xu Peng emphasized the significant importance of using biotechnology to improve medical standards for the benefit of patients.
Xu Peng also mentioned that the ISRMWR and the Clinton Global Initiative have launched the “European Regeneration Plan: Empowering the European Regenerative Medicine Network Construction” initiative, with two important new members added to the initiative, the International Burn Association and the American Burn Association. They will work together to create a series of training courses on burn prevention and fire prevention, which will not only help doctors but more importantly, help more patients and refugees. APEC will be held in San Francisco in 2023, and the ISRMWR will work with organizations in the wound management sector, such as burns, ulcers, and trauma, and even cooperate with organizations in different scientific fields, to bring more comprehensive medical solutions worldwide.
Former President of the American Burn Association, Treasurer of the International Society for Burn Injuries, and Professor of Burn Surgery at UC Davis Medical Center, Dr. Tina Louise Palmieri showcased Professor Rongxiang Xu’s outstanding contributions in the field of burn injuries. She emphasized the importance of burn injury treatment, as the number of patients continues to increase and increasingly severe fires pose a significant threat to humanity. Dr. Palmieri discussed the prospects for regenerative medicine technology, highlighted the important role of Mebo burn ointment in burn skin repair, elucidated the possibility of stem cells inhibiting systemic inflammation, and expressed high hopes for the ongoing FDA Phase II clinical trial of the moist burn ointment.
Next up is Dr. Rodolfo Ariel Miranda Altamirano, the newly elected President and Secretary General of the International Society for Burn Injuries. As a plastic surgeon and director of the Pediatric Burn Unit at the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara, Mexico, he discussed the latest developments in wound repair and regeneration, and shared his experience in treating patients. He noted that although medicine has made great strides in burn treatment over the past 20 years, wound healing remains a major clinical challenge. While cell therapy has its limitations, it can also provide a new perspective on wound management. In addition, mesenchymal stem cell exosomes have potential applications in burn wound treatment. Finally, he introduced the history of the International Society for Burn Injuries and expressed full confidence in future collaboration with the International Society for Regenerative Medicine and Wound Repair. He believes that the future of burn treatment should rely more on the body’s own abilities.
Professor Sadovoy Alexey Stanislavovich from Ukraine introduced the current situation of wound healing therapy in Ukraine, combined with the principles of wound healing therapy, elaborated on the characteristics and advantages of regenerative medical technology, and also mentioned the valuable platform provided by the Clinton Global Initiative for Ukrainian doctors to learn and exchange ideas with global wound management experts. He also emphasized that Ukrainian doctors are very interested in regenerative medical technology and have learned more effective theoretical knowledge and clinical treatment methods through the Clinton Global Initiative training, making more adequate preparations for future treatment of Ukrainian patients.
The 6th International Forum on Regenerative Medicine and Wound Repair, held by the International Society of Regenerative Medicine and Wound Repair, ended with diverse and lively questioning, dialogue, and discussion. Participants not only gained a better understanding of the academic development in wound repair and regeneration fields, but also emphasized the importance of continuing research and progress in this field.
Established in 2018, the International Society of Regenerative Medicine and Wound Repair aims to build a large and inclusive global community of regenerative medicine to promote the development of regenerative medicine around the world. The last Tuesday in February each year is designated as International “Regeneration Day” to commemorate the late Professor Rongxiang Xu, founder of human regenerative restoration science, who was born at the end of February. Since its establishment, the society has brought the development of regenerative medicine to new heights through international academic forums, academic training, and international public welfare actions. In the past six years, the society’s academic footprint has spread across countries and regions such as China, the United States, South Korea, Greece, Ukraine, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Bulgaria, and has worked together with international organizations such as the International Burn Association, the World Wound Healing Society Alliance, the European Wound Management Association, the Asia-Pacific Burn Association, the American Burn Association, the American Society for Regenerative Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and the United Nations Economic and Social Council to promote the development of regenerative medicine. Through international training, the society has played an active role in social welfare, and has been highly recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross, the United Nations academic influence, the Bush Leadership Forum, the Bush Presidential Center, and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The name of the International Society of Regenerative Medicine and Wound Repair has been engraved on the commemorative wall of the Bush Presidential Center.
